Founded in 2021 by Chelsea Makin and joined in 2024 by her husband Andrew Makin, Alkaline is a South African design studio based in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. The studio produces contemporary homeware that blends sculptural form with functionality, working with materials such as concrete, resin, gypsum, and salvaged construction debris. Combining material experimentation with a focus on expressive, functional design, Alkaline creates pieces that translate overlooked resources into objects with purpose and presence.
